Hatittude is a wonderful fresh new collection of portraits of people sporting hats from the sublime to the unusual. Having been told that portraiture exhibited in galleries should only be of classically beautiful people, Mary-Leigh Doyle set out depicting human beings in every walk of life, believing that beauty is anything but skin deep. These mixed media paintings incorporate printmaking, collage, acrylic embellishments as well as traditional oil painting.
Mary-Leigh Doyle is a traditionally trained artist and well-respected instructor in Calgary. Her solo show at Framed on Fifth presents recent works that venture into unchartered territory. Her portraits, including playful New York Easter Parade characters, literally “jump OFF” the canvas by combining her traditional aesthetic with a contemporary mixed media approach. The viewer finds themselves engrossed in a conversation with Mary-Leigh’s unusual portrayal of everyday and unique people, often larger than life.
