Mass Movement drawings by Esther Parker
Many of us don't give a second thought to the ground beneath our feet and its origins, given its apparent permanence and stability. However, the histories of majestic mountains and mundane pebbles tell of fantastical, wondrous and awe-inspiring events that led to their creation. Mass Movement is an exhibition that challenges our perception of the familiar landscapes that we inhabit and reveals the mystery and drama beneath our feet. The exhibit consists of a series of drawings that incorporate elements of photographs, maps and geological diagrams to explore geological processes and rock formations. In addition to the exhibition, Parker will host an artist's talk at 1pm on Sunday April 14th, to discuss her work, sources of inspiration, subject matter and techniques.
Victoria-based artist Esther Parker was born and raised in England, but has lived most of her life in British Columbia. Her artwork reflects her ongoing interest in geology and the colossal forces that continue to shape our landscapes. Parker is a largely self-taught artist, although she has studied at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design and most recently at the Vancouver Island School of Art. She holds a Bachelor of Science (Geography) from the University of Victoria. Parker's artwork has been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the Sooke Fine Arts Show, the Sidney Fine Art Show, the Slide Room Gallery and other venues.
