While Veronica Funk was studying art history at university recently, she was surprised that most of the women artists mentioned were either a male artist’s wife or daughter, rather than being discussed as artists in their own right. She began to research female artists who had worked in Alberta and was inspired to create a new body of work that would focus on these women and their contribution to the arts in Alberta.
As part of her research, she will also visit the Galt Museum archives in Lethbridge and the Whyte Museum archives in Banff along with the research of the Alberta Society of Artists archives.
Artist Statement:
“As a long-time resident and female artist in Alberta, I have felt the challenges that women face in the art world today, with an understanding that in the past the challenges were even greater. Researching archives opens the doors to the history of the women artists that contributed to the growth of arts in Alberta.”
Veronica’s collection Mastrius Women will also be on display during her residency.
