Responding to THE WORKS Festival’s theme “Code”, the exhibition “Metaphor and the Art” showcases diverse and compelling approaches to metaphoric language and symbology in contemporary visual culture. The function of a metaphor in art is generally to evoke a certain emotional state in one who looks at the work. Metaphors use symbolism and comparisons to strengthen a point, and they may also act to represent specific ideas or thoughts. Visual metaphors or visual codes may be obvious or abstract, depending on artist’s emotions, ideas, or experiences.
The exhibition allows the viewer to be more engaged in the art object and – in the process – to finally decipher each work’s unique characteristics and meaning. Curated by Jacek Malec and Ruta Nichol, this exhibition embraces the rich philosophical and conceptual diversity of this theme in a collection of nearly 100 works by 58 established and emerging contemporary Edmonton-based visual artists working in a variety of media.
