Michael Corner has always had a discriminating interest in formal portraiture, which extends to our animal counterparts. His style bridges classical and contemporary traditions in painting, with this new series of work focusing on realistic yet surreal depictions of animals positioned next to commonplace objects.
In Michael's words this forces him to "address the strange character of each individual creature as they would appear to the portraitist. The simple juxtaposition of animal and object shows the merging of two very different worlds, the strangeness of an intelligence that is not our own."
