PLATFORM centre is pleased to present a solo exhibition from Ashley Gillanders (TX). An artist’s tour of the exhibition will take place Friday 10 January at 7 PM followed by an opening reception on the same date at 8 PM. Both events are free and open to the public. We will also be celebrating the launch of a brand-new catalogue also titled Mirror with a Memory. Featuring the work of Ashley Gillanders, and an essay by Gareth Kaye (IL), this full-colour 40pg catalogue was printed in an edition of 200 and will be available for purchase for $20 CAD.

Ashley Gillanders’ exhibition is comprised of new photographic work that explores the perception of space and time. Using a variety of imagery including theatrical stage curtains, mirrors rendered in virtual/digital environments, and fabricated sets paired with photographic ‘representations’ — this work relies on exploring the physical distance between seemingly similar objects to render spatial complexities and uncanny experiences that blur the lines between spaces of origin. Mirror with a Memory explores these spaces between physical and virtual space, questioning what is real and what is perceived to be real.

BIOGRAPHY

Ashley Gillanders is a lens-based artist whose work questions the liminal space between real and perceived reality. She received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she was the New Artist Society Scholar in the photography department from 2016-2018. She has been included in solo and groups exhibitions both nationally and internationally, and has been the recipient of numerous grants and scholarships for her work, including grants from the Manitoba Arts Council and the Winnipeg Arts Council. Her work is represented in the permanent collections of the Joan Flasch Artist Book Collection and the Art Institute of Chicago.
