Surface Tension
I played with a few different phrases while struggling with the awkward task of finding a title for this show, but eventually settled on Surface Tension as I felt it best described my interests. That a coloured surface either looks good and feels satisfying or doesn't, and that this distinction can only be appreciated and never proved is something that is integral to pictorial aesthetic experience. And that some sort of pictorial tension is vital in turning a surface into a painting, and that this tension must not destroy the unity of the surface, well, that's what I think good painting does. That, and communicating a personal experience of existence to other human beings, but this latter is a mysterious process and seems impossible to meaningfully speak about.
