Public Reception on November 8th, 7-10pm.
Group Exhibition Statement: We are three artists who met during a summer adventure in gallery space at the lake. Since that time we have each followed our own path but have kept in touch. This communication and our shared interests led us to the group show “Nature: Colour, Form and Function” where we can examine colour and tonality that may be common in each others’ works. Each artist works within their own medium but explores different concepts, ideas and colour that transfer into an undefinable something within the works of each. The pleasure, challenge and the joy of collaborating together moves us to create. Individuality prevails but the sum of the three presents a cohesive whole.
Monika Hansen generally works in oils, acrylics or watercolours and is a self taught artist. The subject matter in her paintings captures glimpses of the diversity of the Canadian rural and urban landscapes. The paintings generally appear uncluttered and her love for simplicity is evident. She enjoys picking out the tiny details of a tee, or the delicate nature of the flowers found in the wild or in many backyards.
Her paintings appear on canvas and lately on fabric as she explores different ways to functionally use her art. She is currently illustrating a series of Children’s books and was nominated in 2017 by Manitoba Book Awards in the children’s illustrated category for “Wilson, do you hear it?”
Monika has displayed her art work at various gallery art shows at Cre8ery Gallery, Selkirk Art Centre and past Manitoba Art Expos. She is a member of the Assiniboia Group of Artists Co-operative, Selkirk Community Art Centre, and Cre8ery Gallery. Her art is also available in art card form.
Ingrid Lincoln is a textile artist who is interested in colour and texture on fabric. Her works are mainly abstract and convey a mood. She holds certificates in Design and Embroidery from the City & Guilds of London Institute and a B.A. (Hon.) in Embroidered Textiles with Middlesex University, London, England. She has exhibited throughout Canada and the United States. As a result of two residencies at the Banff Centre; she has exhibited work relating to women who explored the Rocky Mountains at the Whyte Museum in Banff. She recently has been a mentee with the MAWA mentorship program.
Tanis Bannister Creating Pottery is in my karma!
From the moment I pulled up that first wobbly pot on the wheel I was hooked! Many pieces later, I realized that creating pottery is not only a passion but a form of meditation for me.
The goal of every potter is to make pieces that beg to be touched and used. I try to create pottery that will stand the test of time and bring pleasure with function. A concept that seems simple but is so very complex with all the steps that pottery entails.
My pottery is influenced by the colours and patterns of nature. Joining Monika and Ingrid in interpreting our individual ideas of nature, has lead me to altering and incising my pottery. The glaze palette reflects the colours of nature and joins our individual mediums in a colourful display of nature’s beauty.
Working with clay has been a gratifying and humbling experience. Pottery has taught me patience and perseverance, it has been a wonderous and magical journey of learning, growing and stretching my imagination.
Tanis was born in Winnipeg and presently resides in St. Andrews, Manitoba, Encouraged by her mother, Tanis has created artwork throughout her life. The colours and patterns found on the prairies and the Interlake, greatly influence Tanis’ functional, wheel thrown pottery. Tanis began her journey as a potter by studying alongside highly respected Winnipeg potter, Valerie Metcalfe of Stoneware Gallery. She has continued her education through raku, paper clay, watercolour, brush stroke and glaze workshops. Her desire to create and passion for the art is evident in both her stoneware and porcelain pieces. Tanis has found success in several galleries and shows throughout Manitoba. She is a proud member of the Selkirk Art Centre, The Wayne Arthur Gallery, and Winnipeg’s Cre8ery.
