Since its invention, thousands of years ago, paper has served as an accessible and transportable medium for art. From old manuscripts to prints, drawings, collages, and paintings, the paper is one of the most popular and generous backdrops for works of art: often, an intricate canvas starts with a study on paper. Artists allow themselves to take risks, to explore, and to create more freely before immortalizing a painting or sculpture.

The artists presented in Works on Paper explore the ephemerality of paper across a broad spectrum. United in their materiality, the works highlight the role of paper as a surface and, at times, even as an active participant: Nancy Boyd's collages, dense compositions of paper on paper, dialogue with Plear's subtle drawings and watercolors; and with Wendy Skog's color schemes – all of them translating sensations and memories into abstract forms and gestures.
