Nicole Katsuras, "Gemstone Book," 2019
oil on canvas, 72" x 48"
Bau-Xi Gallery is pleased to host Toronto-based artist Nicole Katsuras on Sat Oct 19, 2019 2-4 PM during the South Granville Gallery Hop. Visitors are invited to a special preview of her upcoming solo exhibition Painter's Paradise opening Nov 16th, select new paintings will be unveiled in the upper gallery for this one day event.
An interest in aesthetic semantics and systems of meaning informs Katsuras' material experimentation with mark-making to create an expanding visual language of extrusions, brushstrokes and other varied applications of the oil medium.
With her use of high impasto, jewel-like palettes and organic forms, the artist's approach to her paintings speaks to a persistent underpinning force, one which expands through her textured surfaces and exuberant gestures outward from the two-dimensional space of her canvasses.
At once abstract interpretations of and observational remarks on the processes of compression, expansion and drift, Katsuras' compositions are rendered with dynamic, sweeping movements, loose, voluptuous lines and frenetic streaks of colour which layer to build palpitating spatial tensions toward a sublime release.
