Norma Callicott, an Alberta mixed media artist, brings attention to the perilous state of our oceans. In her works, Norma incorporates bits of plastic she collected on the beach into her altered paper works.
I have been an artist for more than 20 years, having worked in oils, acrylics, pastel, collage and mixed media. After retiring in 2016, I started experimenting in mixed media and discovering a newfound process of altering discarded magazine pages. I poured an eco-friendly solvent on these pages and watched the ink melt, creating unique textures and patterns. I also manually and digitally manipulated the ink. Ripped pieces of the paper are used to create collage works which are covered in resin to give an ethereal surreal feeling.
I will be showcasing my series "Oceans in Peril". This series highlights the issue of plastics in the oceans and beach garbage. I integrated bits of beach garbage collected during my travels into the design and resin of several collage works.
