The Ocean has its silent caves,
Deep, quiet, and alone;
Though there be fury on the waves,
Beneath them there is none.
Nathaniel Hawthorne
Earth’s surface is just over 70% water and contains five oceans, the largest being the one that nudges us here in British Columbia, the Pacific, which covers more than 30% of our planet’s surface.
This show, Oceans, celebrates the marine world above, below, and right alongside. Paintings, mixed media, and photography depict beaches, waves, sea creatures, shells, and seaweed. Other artists have made use of the ocean’s bounty by incorporating glass and seashells into vases and other mixed media pieces. But no depiction of the ocean would be complete without mermaids; these are made from clay, and there are also mermaid art dolls – even an anthropomorphic seagull art doll.
Operated by the Society for Arts on the South Island (SASI), whose mission statement is to nurture British Columbia arts and culture … through the production and support of showcases of fine art and craft, the provision of arts education programs, public performances, and special community cultural events, Coast Collective is looking forward to hosting this event.
