This exhibit highlights a traditional fibre art form that originated in Europe and was brought to North America by early settlers.  Pieces were created for the household from re-cycled cloth and wool materials and stitched onto burlap.  In the 1920's the rug hookers of Cheticamp, Nova Scotia (who are still active today) were discovered by Lillian Burke, a New York artist. She introduced their creations to the U.S. market which brought accolades as well as monetary reward to the Maritimes. 

Today, rug hooking groups span all areas of North America. Workshops, conventions and juried exhibitions are held annually throughout. Rug hook artists use a wide variety of materials and techniques in their work and modern pieces don't necessarily adhere to the practical purposes of those created by earlier generations. Rug hooking has evolved from a craft to a fine art and includes two and three dimensional pieces, portraiture, jewellery and fashion.

This exhibit by the Prairie Edge Rug Hookers includes artists from Winnipeg, Beausejour, Oakbank and Lac du Bonnet.
