Portraits in Nature; A Meditation on Process and Loss - an exhibition of cyanotypes by Chris Wutzke
There has been a slow evolution in Wutzke’s artistic practice towards letting go of the need for perfection, and learning how to trust in the action of making rather than the outcome. This selection of cyanotypes (originally displayed at the Marjorie Wood Gallery in 2020) began as primarily an exercise in unburdening, and working towards feeling a sense of peace with the work and within it rather than needing control. Gradually through the process of developing the series though, Wutzke found her focus and motivations shifting as she started to come to terms with the recent loss of her maternal grandmother.
Many of the images Wutzke was capturing in cyan were taken in the gardens at her home, so it's no wonder her reflections on her process took on new meaning. In the end the outcome of this exercise was twofold. Learn to let go of the things you can’t control, and revel in the ecstatic experience of being present in the artistic process, and also the ecstatic experience of being human.
