Pascale Ouellet, "A Raven Story," 2017
encaustic, 48" x 48"
What have we started with and what have we learned?
Art is one of the few professions in which there is a measurable trajectory…..progress readable by followers or complete strangers…..but what happens to the work that is no longer relevant?
Acclaimed Alberta artist Pascale Ouellet is currently practicing the process of removing what is no longer relevant, while preserving that which still informs her practice.
With her newest series, PRETEXTS, Pascale is loosely defining “self-appropriation” in use of her older paintings to underlay new works. Layer by layer, she is able to highlight the best of her skills while covering that which she prefers be lost.
Most illuminating are the moments where she simply cannot find anything to keep, and in other cases, anything to lose.
PRETEXTS will offer an illuminating look at process, skill and self-editing, while dazzling the viewer with some of the artist’s most accomplished paintings yet.
