PRIDE IN CHINATOWN, 2019 Curated by Paul Wong
A one night only magical twilight event in a spectacular setting in the heart of Vancouver’s historical Chinatown. This very special event will take over the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Park, the Classical Chinese Garden, and the public plaza. Pride in Chinatown celebrates queer Asian-Canadian art and artists that will tantalize all five senses. Presented by On Main Gallery, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, and Vancouver Art and Leisure’s Alternative Pride Festival.
This will be an interdisciplinary art experience that will feature new experimental and traditional art forms. Including electronic music, immersive theatre, media art installations, lion dancing, martial arts, drums, opera, culinary treats, drag and other non-binary encounters. House of Rice, Vancouver’s only all Asian drag family, will be inhabiting the Garden’s China Maple Hall and will play host to all those who wish to enter their oeuvre. Onibana Taiko will perform thunderous drumming from atop the Ting. Nancy Lee will provide evocative electronic music in the Hall of One Hundred Rivers. Classical pianist Rachel Iwaasa will be performing a silent conceptual work. And out-loud trans wizard Tien Neo Eamas will transform into the Floating Deity.
The plaza will feature a curated selection of local vendors and kiosks as part of a market space that will include additional performances and interventions by such artists as lion dancer Dora Ng, participatory art by Candie Tanaka, Mobil Art, and Hot and Noisy. Love Intersections will feature traditional Chinese aphrodisiacs. Vendors will include Little Mountain Shop, See You Soon Studio, and Edible Projects.
This inclusive, intergenerational happening includes a host of Community Partners: Queer Arts Festival, Chinatown Transformation Team, the Chinese Cultural Centre, with support from the City of Vancouver’s Creative City Strategic Grant, Community Arts Grant, and Parks Board Arts and Culture.
This event takes place on unceded Indigenous land belonging to the Coast Salish peoples. This includes the territories of the Musqueam, Skxwú7mesh-ulh, Stó:lo & Tsleil-Waututh nations.
