Art Gallery of Alberta, "Re:Calculations," 2020
Re:Calculations features a selection of recent acquisitions of contemporary art, added to the AGA’s collection over the last few years. While many of the works appear to be fully non-representational or non-figurative, they draw from or make reference to concrete, often industrial, things: circuitry patterns, floor tiles, tables, masking tape, sheets of sandpaper and the contours of the human body. Some of the artists turn to painting itself as their source, with colour and brushstroke heightened and enlarged. Others use systems to compose and configure their works, from simple stacking procedures to the application of complex computer algorithms. Through their shared references to measuring, manufacturing and manipulating, these works speak to a contemporary world that is calculated, digitized and constructed.
