Program Description
The ODD Gallery, in collaboration with STEPS (Sustainable Thinking & Expressions in Public Spaces), is pleased to present Re:Imagine | Re:Create, a public art initiative that champions sustainability, creative reuse, and community engagement. This program will commission the creation of two original site-specific public artworks utilizing reclaimed materials sourced from various locations across Dawson City, including the municipal dump, Thrift Store, Free Store, local construction sites, mis-tint paint from Home Hardware, and donations from voluntary community members.
This initiative seeks to engage an artist with a demonstrated history of working with reclaimed materials, ensuring the final artworks are not only structurally sound but also conceptually rigorous, inclusive, and accessible to a diverse audience. The selected artist will be challenged to consider both the environmental implications of material reuse and the social narratives embedded within the salvaged objects, transforming discarded materials into evocative public art installations that foster dialogue and reflection.
The completed works will be temporarily installed on the Dawson City dike as part of the Yukon Riverside Arts Festival (YRAF) taking place June 12 - 15, 2025. By activating this prominent public space with thought-provoking and environmentally conscious art, Re:Imagine | Re:Create aims to highlight the potential of creative sustainability while deepening community connections to both the artistic process and the local landscape.
