This exhibition explores the emotional bonds developed between young women as they confront trauma, misogyny, sexual harassment, and sexual assault. This work serves as an ode to the healing, empathy, and strength women channel within themselves and each other.
First as adolescents, then in adulthood, we too often watch tears roll down cheeks, place hands on shoulders, and offer words resembling “You can cry in front of me. You will be alright." The generation that came of age during the explosion of the #MeToo movement is acclimated to the dialogue surrounding accountability and the negative repercussions of assault. However, this work intends to shift the focus from violence and persecution to the quieter moments of solidarity that facilitate personal transformation in women.
Fruit motifs are famously used to represent female sexuality and fertility in art and other media. In this series, ravaged fruit challenges historical depictions of the body as an object existing for consumption. The nature of the scene calls for an evaluation of notions of sexuality and autonomy in proximity to violence and body.
