Red Earth: Africa is a project that has spanned a six-year period beginning in 2013. The final phase of which was completed over a three-month period from January to April, 2019. This journey has taken me overland from St. Louis in Senegal to Cape town, South Africa and began out of a desire to document the everyday life of the African people. I feel we are all bound by common threads and basic needs such as education, clean water, food for our families and the need to come together within a community, all intersect with our own desires. In Africa, the chasm between wealth and poverty make these necessities not easy to achieve, and unattainable for most. It was in the never-ending landscape with its small villages and the streets of the more urban centers that I saw their resilience, struggles, and their pride in being African.
My documentary photography and my selection of subjects is purposeful, relaying a quiet sensitivity to both the people and their surroundings. It relays a story that at times goes beyond the scope of written words, becoming a frozen narrative that captures a fleeting moment, and perhaps creates in the eye of the viewer a private story. - Anne Tapler White
