Elaine Hughes: ReVisions
to
Elaine Hughes, "ReVisions," 2019
Plan to attend the Meet-the-Artist Reception on Sunday, September 15th from 1 to 3.
Some say that an artist paints a particular moment in time and, by so doing, both the artist AND the artist’s world have been changed, thereby making it impossible to replicate the result. Elaine Hughes explores this concept through a series of paintings of identical scenes.
An active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, Elaine has exhibited in both their local shows and their gallery on Granville Island, Vancouver. Now working primarily in watercolour, she has participated in many group exhibitions in Edmonton, Alberta, as well as in the Victoria area, including the Sooke Fine Arts Show and the Sidney Fine Art Show. Elaine also exhibits and teaches workshops at Coast Collective Gallery.
As a child, Elaine loved crayons and nature, and it was in her grandfather’s studio that she first learned to draw using brittle sticks of vine charcoal. (These are thin charcoal sticks that are obtained by burning grape vines in a kiln without air.) This love of nature has endured to the present day and Elaine uses her art to express the glory of life on our planet, our home. Post-impressionistic in style, Elaine’s paintings feature intense colours and variety, dedicated to portraying the forms, moods, and beauty of the natural world.
Operated by the Society for Arts on the South Island (SASI), whose mission statement is to nurture British Columbia arts and culture … through the production and support of showcases of fine art and craft, the provision of arts education programs, public performances, and special community cultural events, the Coast Collective Art Centre is open 11:00 to 5:00 Wednesday through Sunday.
