Opening Reception: November 4, 2023 from 2 - 5pm
The exhibition is an engaging installation and incorporates several companion events including an artist talk and a Sound Presentation in collaboration with @de_vinchee sound designer.
metsänpeitto is a word from Finnish folklore that can be translated as “to be covered in forest” and as “a state of being where a familiar forest becomes unrecognizable.” Greabeiel’s metsänpeitto explores photography as a site to inhabit and undo family myths through performance. The work presented in the show was produced in 2023 during Greabeiel’s stay at the Art Shed residency in Sointula, British Columbia. Originally founded in 1901 by socialist Finnish settlers, Sointula is located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded Kwakwaka’wakw territory of the ‘Namgis, Mamalilikala, and Kwakiutl Nations, also known by the colonial name, Malcolm Island.
