Newzones is thrilled to announce a solo exhibition of new work, Road Trip Menagerie, by Canadian contemporary artist, Samantha Walrod.
Samantha Walrod is best known for her multimedia artworks depicting Canadian wildlife and flora. Walrod’s exploration uses numerous layers of paint, collage, photography, and inks embracing the tactile nature of her practice while incorporating images through collage and digital technology. Constructive elements from the collage and multimedia investigations are prominent through the edges of ripped paper, discrete tonal differences in photographs, and through the addition and layering of paint. Explorations into multimedia such as these act as filtered interpretations of the subject matter.
The exhibition, Road Trip Menagerie is a collection of lovingly collaged renderings of bears, wolves, and deer that are on the edge of the wilderness, adjacent to roads and thoroughfares, visible before disappearing onto paths less accessible to vehicle transportation. Walrod’s artwork represents a fleeting moment of human and animal interaction while observing the essential but shrinking distance between human and animal habitats. Each painting is akin to a snapshot, or a tourist photo of a roadside sighting reminiscent of her own experiences during travel through Alberta’s national and provincial parks
Samantha Walrod received her MFA Painting from U of A in 2013, and obtained her BFA from AUArts in 2008 with distinction. In 2018, Walrod was awarded the “RBC Work Room” residency at the Art Gallery of Alberta. Walrod’s work can be found in the collections of the Art Gallery of Alberta (Edmonton), Alberta Foundation for the Arts (Edmonton), University of Alberta (Edmonton), Peaks Hotel and Spa (Banff) and various private and public collections world-wide.
