From marigolds, zinnias, ceramic made at Medalta, furniture, feathers and myriad other materials, Dhaliwal forms vividly beautiful explorations of migration, immigration, family and diaspora, both in the Art Gallery and the Esplanade gardens. In new works created at Medalta specifically for the exhibition, Sarindar combines historical facts, such as Rudyard Kipling’s visits to Medicine Hat and the lives of WWII war brides, with imaginative narrative.

Sarindar was born in the Punjab, India, raised in London, England, and immigrated to Ontario in 1968. Sarindar earned a PhD in Cultural Studies from Queen’s University in 2019, a Masters of Fine Art (with Distinction) from York University, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Falmouth School of Art, Cornwall, UK. She has presented many solo exhibitions in Canada, and participated in group exhibitions in Trinidad, India and Texas. Two of her works are included in Vision Exchange: Perspectives from India to Canada, presented by the Art Gallery of Alberta and the National Gallery of Canada, currently touring to five galleries in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.
