Mireille Perron: Anatomy of a Glass Menagerie: Alta-Glass

The Anatomy of a Glass Menagerie: Altaglass is a solo exhibition of works by Calgary based artist Mireille Perron. One hundred and thirteen delicately blown glass figurines juxtaposed against deep blue cyanotype monoprints create a body of work founded on the artist’s curiosity of craft practices and their histories. These works were inspired by Perron’s residency at Medalta’s International Artist in Residence Program, which provided an opportunity for Perron to explore and research the Altaglass collection at Hycroft China Ltd. These objects became the foundation of this body of work, as each of the Altaglass glass figurines became the subjects for her cyanotype prints; a monoprint generated by UV light exposure.

Mireille Perron is a professor emeritus at UA Arts and is the founder of The Laboratory of Feminist Pataphysics, a social experiment that masquerades as collaborative works of art/events.

JULY 10, 2020 Leaving an Impression: Cyanotype Workshop with Mireille Perron

This 3-hour workshop begins with an exhibition tour, presentation and a hands-on learning opportunity. Participants will explore one of the earliest photographic processes ever developed and end the day by making their own cyanotype print.

The cyanotype process, also known as blueprint or sunprint utilizes photosensitive iron salts and continues to be relevant today to produce fine art prints. This process can be done with paper and fabric. This workshop will focus on cyanotype paper. You will design, expose in the sun, and develop in water your own cyanotypes. A UV lamp will be available and used for comparison.

Participants are asked to bring their own objects/materials for their compositions. Select your objects thinking of the shadows that they will leave. This program is in association with the exhibition Mireille Perron: The Anatomy of a Glass Menagerie: Altaglass, as such, we encourage you to bring reflective glass objects i.e. marbles, small drinking glasses and other transparent objects. If you own any Altaglass animals, as used by the artist in the exhibition, bring them!  You can also use objects such as lace, strings, leaves, gears, etc. to create shapes and cast shadows. Experimentation can produce some really interesting results. Please look at the series of videos made for the exhibition on the Esplanade website as well as the posted exhibition catalogue in advance.

All materials will be provided with the exception of the objects you need for your compositions.

Be ready to be outside in the sun (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottle, etc.). This workshop will adhere to physical distancing protocols. Due to considerations regarding COVID, food and drink will not be provided, please bring your own snacks if required.
