Sheila Kernan’s vivid imagination comes to life through her one-of-a-kind multimedia creations. Her brightly coloured, highly textured paintings are filled with thick juicy brushstrokes, soft delicate washes, and skillful hand cut stencils. Utilizing many techniques each piece contains 5-10 layers of paint. Carefully composed and inspired by her extensive traveling Sheila’s paintings first start out as miniature paper collages, full scale drawings and colour studies. Employing only the highest quality materials each work is a labour of love.
“This series of five 3-dimensional paintings is inspired by the idea of providing an immersive experience for the viewer. The idea popped into my head while reading a children’s pop-up book to my 6-month-old son. I loved the interactive experience for the viewer and began wondering how I could work this into my process. Deconstructing and reconstructing my process in a new and exciting way I create hand drawn laser cut aluminum stencils which are then painted and mounted onto paintings. The result is a sculptural painting. The sculptural component is subtle from a distance and as you approach the paintings the 3-dimensional quality becomes more apparent."
