The Body of Language and the Motion of Words
Video Installation and billboard project by Stephanie Deumer (Los Angeles)
The Body of Language and the Motion of Words is a sculptural video installation by Stephanie Deumer, inspired by writings of the late architect, artist, and poet Madeline Gins. The exhibition aims to create an environment where subjects, objects, text, and space shift indefinitely, blurring their definitional boundaries. Elements in the show exist in an osmotic state, simultaneously reflecting and absorbing one another. For example a video cube shows the corresponding gallery walls that it faces, thereby creating a simulated mirror image of the room. In another instance, video footage shows a subject folding paper into the recognizable forms of an airplane and cootie-catcher. However in the process of being constructed, their shapes echo the contours of the (female) body that is creating them. Through various depictions and representations, the pieces fold into one another and fluctuate between the tangible and the digital.
