THIS Gallery is pleased to announce IT DOESN’T STOP IT DOESN’T STOP, a solo exhibition of lithographic prints by Vancouver-based artist Dan Starling. The exhibition runs from September 12–21, 2025, with a public opening reception on Saturday, September 13, from 12 to 4 pm.
About the Exhibition
In IT DOESN’T STOP IT DOESN’T STOP, Starling assembles a series of lithographic prints that combine text panels from the manga Deadman Wonderland (2007–2013), still images from his film Sans Sans Soleil (2018), and handmade abstractions derived from screen-tones. What begins as representation gradually becomes dense with layers of imagery, ultimately dissolving narrative coherence.
Starling explores how printmaking — a medium defined by sequence and repetition — both aligns with and disrupts storytelling. Each plate or stone carries the potential for variation: shifts in inking, mis-registrations, or accidental overlaps introduce disjunctions that fracture the smooth flow of narrative. These interruptions mirror wider cultural ruptures, where systems of power and continuity falter.
The exhibition’s title references Jacques Lacan’s Seminar XX and his theorization of the unconscious as a force that “doesn’t stop not being written.” When the unconscious “stops being written,” the suspension of continuity exposes the structures that sustain dominant systems. Within capitalism, such breaks reveal the exploitation and inequality that underpin its apparent seamlessness. For Starling, disrupting the narrative opens space for resistance, critique, and possibility.
