Susan Barker and Issy Covey are the dynamic duo and have been friends for over thirty years. As such, when Sue proposed a joint exhibit to Issy, they both agreed that the theme of kitchen art would serve their respective painting and ceramic work, well!
They have been creating their artwork in the kitchen, the heart of the home, in the midst of the hustle and bustle of daily life. Working in their kitchens inspired both artists to create 'kitchen' art about the place they work. And what better place to create food and kitchen art than where they work! The artwork is immediately available as they walk past and check on the clay or add a few brush loads of paint, then carry on with daily life or continue to work on their pieces throughout the day.
Here’s what their kitchens mean to them, from their joint artist statement:
We want to encompass the fact that our studios are in our kitchens, the place of building artwork, food preparation and its enjoyment, friends and family gatherings, love and conversation, and to complement those ideas with our artwork; showcasing and glorifying food in paintings and food functional ceramics, all the while celebrating our strong friendship and melding our artwork together. The kitchen is the area where we both work and have shared together cups of coffee, tea, beer, wine, food, conversation, brainstorming and ideas. Food and artwork, the thought and preparation of, the visual effect and the consumption, both orally or visually, fills and feeds the body and soul. What a perfect combination!
