I have a lot of junk. Bits and pieces of this and that in which I see “potential design.” Things most other people would throw away. I have trouble with this throw-away mentality. I also like to create, upcycle, reuse and reduce the amount we discard. When I feel snowed under by my stuff, my creative mind won’t let me sleep at night and I come up with all these great ideas for using my junk, most of which I have forgotten by morning. But a few ideas stick and then I get to work, trying to create something beautiful and hopefully useful from detritus.
The theme of this body of work is Refraction And Reflection. I notice how light refracts through the broken edges of old glass enhancing the colour, how it reflects from the mica in stones and makes them glitter. I notice patterns created by collections of items considered garbage, and the appeal of items once treasured, now discarded. I place this “junk” around reused mirror pieces to reflect light and encourage reflection of our throw-away society.
Using refuse to create beauty, and finding a way to present discarded keepsakes and no longer useful items in an attractive and useful way, is satisfying to me, and hopefully interesting to you. - Susan Hoyle
