Symbol and Language in Art: an Exhibition in Celebration of BC Culture Days, 2018

People of all cultures use symbols in art to express ideas, beliefs and realities. Symbolic meaning is often heavily dependent on both lived experience and cultural background. Likewise, words and language have been used in art throughout history to convey ideas or concepts in thought provoking or symbolic ways.

How do you use symbol or language in your art?

The Victoria Arts Council in partnership with the Arts Centre at Cedar Hill invites local artists to take part in Art and Language: an Exhibition in Celebration of BC Culture Days 2018! This is a lightly juried exhibition that will display artwork from across the community. We welcome artists of all skill level and of all media who are resident (including part-time) in Greater Victoria and the surrounding areas.

• All pieces must be labelled, wired, and ready to hang.
• 2-D pieces up to 9' sq.
• 3-D pieces must be under 3ft tall.
• Works will be reviewed on a first come first serve basis due to limited venue space. Submit early to avoid disappointment.
• Works are lightly juried in order to ensure connection to theme and appropriateness for a family friendly environment.
• Artists choose the retail (sale) price of their work including all applicable taxes. Your work does not have to be for sale to be exhibited in the exhibition.
• Up to two works accepted from each artist.
• All pieces sold are subject to a 20% commission payable to the Victoria Arts Council.
• $10 per accepted work for VAC members, $20 per accepted work for non-members.
• Placement of works will be determined by curatorial team after intake.
