The Inuit Gallery is pleased to present the work of Yup'ik artist, Terresa White.
Terresa White’s bronze sculptures arise out of her memories and the stories she heard from her family and combine with her experience as a Yup’ik woman living in a large urban environment. Her work allows her to retain a link to the culture-bearers and her ancestral homeland from which she has been displaced. The Yup’ik stories of transformation and the understanding of the world as profoundly interconnected inform works such as her lovely Sedna sculpture in which the sea goddess is emerging from the back of a whale, or in the beautiful Woman Transforming into a Bear.
As the artist has said “I hope my masks and figures reveal to viewers something of their meanings, reminding them of their inseparable connection to all, their resilient animal bodies, and their inborn abilities to greet the sweet moments in life with full guiltless pleasure and the dark moments with courage and transformation.”
