Because I was born and raised in Regina, where the land is flat and bewitchingly beautiful, I'm drawn to the open prairie. Instead of traditional “scenery” it offers light and colour in infinite variety. It's challenging to paint because its so hard to depict: The horizon has to be nailed down convincingly, and of course the sky has to float above all. Ironically, some great abstract painters--many of them friends--have helped me find new ways and means to accomplish this..
In the decades we lived in Alberta, I frequently painted the mountains. When I returned to mountain subjects recently I looked for different points of view, new slants of light.
I've been painting the ocean near Victoria for some 15 years and have done so more earnestly when we moved here in 2013. The ocean has its own challenges, but what I've learned from painting the prairie has helped. - Terry Fenton
