Artist Statement
Why don't more artists paint the open prairie? Perhaps because I was born and raised in Regina, where the land seems endlessly open and flat and bewitchingly beautiful, I'm attracted to it. The southern prairie isn't "scenery" in the conventional sense; instead of hills and mountains and trees it offers light and colour in infinite variety. It's challenging to the painter because its emptiness is hard to depict. Among other things I've found that the horizon has to be nailed down convincingly, and of course the sky has to float above all. Ironically, some great abstract painters--many of them my friends--have helped me new find ways and means to accomplish this.
As I now live on the West Coast, I also paint the sea, albeit through prairie eyes.
