The Polygon Gallery 101 Carrie Cates Court, North Vancouver, British Columbia V7M 3J4
On April 10 at 7:00 pm Presentation House Gallery will screen the multidisciplinary project The Exhibition of a Film by curator Mathieu Copeland, at Vancity Theatre, in the presence of the director who will open the evening with a talk.
Offering an exploration of ideas surrounding the intrinsic nature of a exhibition, The Exhibition of a Film is an experimental project, both curatorial and cinematographic. The film brings together visual artists, musicians, performers, choreographers, and writers to consider the question: "Can an exhibition take place in a cinema theatre rather than a gallery space?”
The Exhibition of a Film with Mac Adams, Fia Backström, Jonathan Burrows, Nick Cave, David Cunningham, Philippe Decrauzat, Peter Downsbrough, Maria Eichhorn, F.M. Einheit, Tim Etchells, Alexandre Estrela, John Giorno, Sam Gleaves, Kenneth Goldsmith, Myriam Gourfink, Lætitia Sadier, among many others.
The screening will be preceded by a talk by Mathieu Copeland and followed by a reception. Movie posters and trailers by participating artists and musicians will be on view in the Vancity Theatre lobby. The event is a co-production with Vancity Theatre, made possible with support from the Embassy of France.
Mathieu Copeland is a curator based in London, UK, and a lecturer at HEAD, Geneva, who seeks to subvert the traditional role of exhibitions and to renew our perceptions of them. His exhibitions include VOIDS, A Retrospective (Centre Pompidou, Paris, and the Kunsthalle, Bern); A Choreographed Exhibition (Kunsthalle St Gallen & La Ferme du Buisson); Soundtrack for an Exhibition, Alan Vega, and Gustav Metzger (Musee d’Art Contemporain, Lyon); A Mental Mandala (MUAC, Mexico City); and most recently A Retrospective of Closed Exhibitions (Kunsthalle Fribourg, Switzerland). Copeland also initiated and curated the series “A Spoken Word Exhibitions,” “Reprise” and the “Exhibitions to Hear Read” at MoMA, New York, in 2013. In 2017 he edited the anthology The Anti-Museum, co-published by Koenig Books.
