The celebrations of Canada 150 have been diverse and inclusive at the Galt. The Galt Museum celebrated National Aboriginal Awareness Week and hosted Jackson 2Bears’ Canada 150 art exhibit at the Fort. The Galt celebrated Canada Day, the Fort’s birthday, Nikka Yuko’s 50th, the Kainai High School students’ reflection on history and culture and the twinning of St. Laurent, all related to Canada 150. “The installation of the Galts statue is the last of our celebrations for 2017,” according to Susan Burrows-Johnson, CEO/Executive Director.
Lethbridge owes much of its early development to the Galts and their activities. Lethbridge was started as an industrial community, developed around the coal mines and transporting coal to the markets. The Galt companies were also involved in irrigation and agriculture.
“One of our intentions, for 2017 and Canada’s 150, was to tell our community about the Galts,” said Ms. Burrows-Johnson. The Galt Museum’s new irrigation and coal mine outdoor exhibits will also be open on SEP 4 for playing and learning.
The official unveiling of the new sculpture will begin at 1 pm with comments at 2 pm. Speakers will include a Galt family member and a Galt historian. There will be showings of the short film Lethbridge: A Tales of Two Galts, cupcakes, kids’ activities and live music. Admission to the museum is free for the day.
