The POPway has gotten even more immersive, thanks to compositions created by MacEwan music students that respond to the project. Curated by MacEwan recording student Carla Lenfesty, the four commissioned pieces are the new soundtrack for the cut vinyl work derived from drawings created by Grade 6 students and reimagined by designer Jeff Kulak as part of the Big Rock Candy Mountain project, POPOPOPOPOP .
Read below to learn more about the contributing students – curator Carla Lenfesty, musicians Dane Bjornson, Emily Dakin, Gareth Gilliland and Holly Sangster – and their compositions.
During the 2020/21 school year, artists Hannah Jickling and Reed H. Reed of Big Rock Candy Mountain convened local artists, including MacEwan alumni and students, to co-create a soda-based drinkable publication, POPOPOPOPOP , following workshop-based Critical Soda Studies with Ms. Chong’s Grade 6 class, and their music classes with Mrs. Andrews, at John A. McDougall Elementary School.
