Join us on Saturday, June 23rd from 2 - 4 pm for the Opening Reception of Tim Merrett's newest painting exhibition: 'An Unruly History'. Artist will be in attendance.
Tim Merrett’s rich oils navigate the realm between modern abstract colour fields and the highly rendered still lifes of the European Old Masters. Elements plucked from art historical giants like Vermeer, Latour, and Caravaggio rest within the geometry of Merrett’s nuanced colour panels. This process of appropriation and selective compositional cropping, followed by contemporary re-contextualization, has occupied Merrett for many years.
"In this series I wanted to take the appropriated works and settle them into a more aggressive, almost uncomfortable context. I wanted to salvage discarded materials, materials that visually represented a tumultuous discarded history and have them surround specific historical paintings. The finished works dragged into a contemporary context symbolizing the decay of time and the unruly history in which they were created, both in the past and now in the present." - Tim Merrett
Tim Merrett studied Graphic Design at George Brown College in Toronto, Painting and Mixed Media at Ontario College of Art, and Art History at Athabasca University in Alberta. From 1996-2001, appropriately heeding tutelage traditions of the Old Masters, Merrett apprenticed with renowned American-born Canadian painter David Bierk (1944-2002). His influence continues to be seen in Merrett’s work, which has been exhibited in solo exhibitions in cities across North America (including New York, Boston, Montreal, Toronto, and San Francisco). Merrett’s paintings are featured in public and corporate collections in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom, as well as in private collections throughout Asia, Europe, and North America.
