ärdəfakts n. handmade objects, as in tools or decorations, belonging to an earlier time or cultural stage; items reflecting contemporary society or popular culture.
Melanie Figueroa and Tracy Burton explore themes of cultural memory, preservation and our nostalgic connection to societal artefacts.
Melanie focuses on the fading icons of our modern time-scape. She is enchanted by the elegant erosion of man-made constructs and nature’s perseverance within metropolitan environments. Snapshots of familiar neighbourhood scenes such as weathered fences, corroding dumpsters and colorful clotheslines are reflected in her playfully painted urban vignettes.
Tracy reveals her passion for western and indigenous culture, history and pre-history. She seeks out the deep immortal thread that compels us to remember our origins and moves us to create. Incorporating paint and photography along with elemental materials like feathers, beads and copper wire, she ties the past to the present and reminds us of our early ancestry.
