OPENING RECEPTION JANUARY 12th, Friday night 6‑9 PM
We are extremely pleased to feature three artists who embrace unique approaches to their practices, which they proudly explore, and can call their own.
Jon Shaw holds a BFA and was trained in both traditional visual arts and digital design/commercial illustration, and enthusiastically blurs those lines through heavily-layered applications of paint and drawn line. Constantly examining the definition between “painter” and “illustrator”, Jon embraces the experimental and unique mark-making this allows. His work is definitely one-of-a-kind and deconstructs elements that represent the unique character of many specific and local neighbourhoods.
Mark Ollinger has run his own clothing design co. and has background in 3D graffiti. His gallery work could be described as Celtic knots meet contemporary graffiti, with a optical and 3D relief elements. Each piece is based on a word that forms an unbroken, interwoven line. His process is insanely extensive, starting from hand drawn sketches, to digital distortions, to a CNC laser cutting machine, then hand shaped and sanded, and finally painted by the artist’s trademark techniques.
Andre Serin holds an MFA and works from digital to analogue. He often starts by manipulating a digital image, which in turn becomes physical through an interpretive silicone drawing. The resulting lines create texture and boundaries, which are then animated through the intricate pouring of fluid acrylic paint. His work explores the boundary between representation and abstraction through curated observations of our physical and emotional environments.
