Susan Delaney: Undertow – women I’ve known
Susan Delaney’s exhibit features a series of acrylic and mixed media portraits on canvas, wood and paper. In her artist’s statement, Delaney says she finds herself drawn to working with images of people, mostly women in her family of origin, and herself. There is a strong autobiographical theme in this body of work that uses photographic imagery to reflect themes of history and memory.
She chooses images according to how they impel her, and responds to the images allowing non-narrative perception and association to direct the work, letting anything that wants to speak arise unconsciously through the creative decision-making process.
Delaney says, “I find there is a kind of 'artefacty' soul in the fact of a photograph that just can’t be captured in a drawing or painting, however close the likeness.”
For her, working on the portraits and responding to the finished pieces can be a never-ending experience of discovery. She hopes to evoke a similar soulful current in the mind of the viewer.
The gallery will be open for extended hours on First Friday, December 3 until 6:30 p.m. with the artist in attendance.
