Western Front is delighted to welcome back our free artist talks as part of the 2025 Vancouver International Jazz Festival. These much-loved events offer a unique opportunity to engage with leading voices in experimental and improvised music. This year’s talks will feature live musical improvisation woven into the conversations and will also be livestreamed, so you can join us from anywhere.
On Wednesday, June 25, French composer and improviser Eve Risser will share reflections on her visionary approach to sound, the possibilities of the prepared piano, and the central role of improvisation in her practice. She’ll be joined in conversation by percussionist and scholar Dylan van der Schyff.
Then on Thursday, June 26, renowned Filipinx-American composer, percussionist, and sound artist Susie Ibarra will discuss her boundary-defying musical language, which bridges traditional rhythms with avant-garde experimentation. The talk will be moderated by clarinetist François Houle.
