Greg Marshall, "bearing," 2019

Broadcast Lab features Vicki Chau, a Calgary-based Chinese/Canadian who draws on the teachings and family traditions passed down to her to create her work.  Pulled Strings blends Chinese food and music, demonstrating the passing down of culture between generations.  Pulled Strings runs September 12 – November 30, 2019.

Multi-media artist Ryan Fortie Broadcast Lab piece encapsulates one day of travel, never leaving the confines of the vehicle.  As described by Fortie, “We are subjects of the urban center around us, but we are also selectors, perpetually weaving our way through the detritus towards another sunset.”  Roadtrip Montage runs September 12 – November 30, 2019.

Also featured is Greg Marshall, a Calgary-based video artist whose work bearing has been screened at Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival, Scotland, and at Fracto in Berlin in May, 2019. A machine-like art video, bearing composes Google 360° Sphere photographs from Yemen with recorded data from over 327 US military drone attacks in Yemen between 2002 to 2018.  bearing runs September 12 – November 30, 2019.

+15 Soundscape exhibition I-Thou by Jonathan Kawchuk stems from the young but vibrant tradition of Ecomusicology. “I am fascinated by how the music and sound we create can interact with, and stem from, the natural world, rather than just mirror the sounds and structures we hear.”  I-Thou runs September 9 – January 6, 2020.

Artist Biographies

Jonathan Kawchuk is a field recordist, sound artist, and composer from Canada. For his debut album, North (Paper Bag Records), all compositions were played back into the forests of Jostedal National Park, Norway, and re-recorded after reverberating around their natural surroundings.

Jonathan is an alumnus of the Canadian Film Centre’s Slaight Family Music Residency as well as the Banff Centre for the Arts Musicians in Residence program. He is represented by Evolution Music Partners as a film composer and has scored multiple feature-length films, web series, and video features (including spots for Vogue Italia and Dior).

In addition to his formal education, he has held a recording internship in Iceland, learned gamelan in Indonesia, and studied wildlife field recording in England under Chris Watson (Frozen Planet, Nova).

Kawchuk is currently the Canadian representative of Quiet Parks International.

Ryland Fortie is a multi-media artist working in painting, sculpture, and video. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (2016) from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC. Fortie has exhibited artwork in British-Columbia, Yukon, and Alberta, where he recently produced a public sculpture for the City of St. Albert. Fortie has worked as a preparatory installation technician, and art instructor for the Kamloops Art Gallery, as well as an artist’s assistant to artist Kevin Schmidt. His work as an Artist Researcher to The SSHRC funded Camera Obscura Project was a top 25 Finalist in the SSHRC Story Tellers Competition in 2016. After walking The Camino del Norte across Spain in the autumn of 2017, Fortie now lives and works in Edmonton.

Greg Marshall is an artist from Calgary working in various forms of video. His recent work “bearing” was screened at Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival, Scotland, and at Fracto in Berlin in May, 2019. He is also shortlisted for the New Technological Art Award 2019 Biennial to exhibit with a group of 20 international artists for the month of November in Ghent, Belgium. His previous art video “Drone” at festivals in New York, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, EMAF Germany and other exhibition in US cities and in Canada. His work often delves into technology and its various implications. His art practice also draws from his background as a freelance animator and visual effects supervisor and often from his military upbringing. He graduated from fine arts study at the Alberta University for the Arts (formerly ACAD) in 1994 and volunteers as Treasurer for EMMedia, an artist-run media art centre in Calgary since for the past 6 years.
