VOCES INSUMISAS Exploring Contemporary Mexico Through Art, 2020
VOCES INSUMISAS explores the social and political scenario in Mexico through the unique lenses of three artists who respond to these issues unambiguously through different mediums. The works deal with topics ranging from femicide, institutional corruption, state violence, oppression, and migration issues.
Eva Fernandez Ojeda, performance
As I navigate this world, I use my body as a tool of expression. I question the socio-political systems that we live under through the use of the spoken word, body language, and text. I focus on my experience as a Mexican brown woman living in Canada and through it, I raise questions about race and feminism.
Damian Oriak R, sound art
I have a strong desire to convey the meaning of Mexico’s disregarded narratives through complex soundscapes by incorporating Mexican culture and sound iconography in ways that highlight issues of identity, violence, and oppression.
Carolina de la Cajiga, curator and conceptual mixed media
People are born free. No state, nation, or country owns any human being. While products travel with ease across the artificial barriers, people face insurmountable obstacles created by those in control. Whimsically, through my artwork, I help people overcome the sham impediments.
