The camera, historically, was used as an oppressive tool to document Indigenous peoples and communities through the use of props, costumes, and lack of consent. These existing images reduce Indigenous peoples as a thing of the past, negating our contemporary existence.
Wâhkôhtowin: Capturing Relations allows Indigenous women to be in control of the camera. The Cree term "wâhkôhtowin" represents the concept of "kinship" or "relations," recognizing an individuals relationship with everything and everyone in creation.
This group exhibition captures the varying ways that the reclamation of the photograph allows sovereignty, and the ways of depicting the tenderness and love for those in our lives today and for those who have passed.
Each of the seven artists captures the connections they share with their loved ones with the utmost care, through a variety of mediums and methods.
