In George Littlechild’s new series “Warrior” he has painted 10 portraits (5 female & 5 male) of 10 individual First Nations people who are fighting the good fight for the planet, the environment and mankind. These individuals are dedicated and devoted to making positive change in their community and in the world, so that future generations will have a better place to inhabit. The Warrior portraits truly represent many of the ideals scared to First Nations of how humans should live in harmony with one another and with the natural world, and that it is our sacred duty to protect Mother Earth.
George Littlechild is well known for his bold and colourful pop style of Indigenous portraiture. Working in a variety of media, including acrylic, pastel and collage, his paintings are often rich with meaning and symbols of both First Nations historical referencing, and current sociopolitical issues. His goal is to break down barriers of cultural marginalization brought about by an “us against them” attitude.
George Littlechild has developed and honed a very personal and distinct artistic style over an extensive thirty-year career, encompassing over 120 group shows, 35 solo exhibitions, and numerous awards, honours and distinctions.
"This exhibition offers visual beauty, strength & fortitude, as seen in the ten Warriors in this exhibition. Each Warrior represents different world views/issues that they have chosen to battle/take a stance on, in order to create “Change” on Mother Earth. The Titles of the artworks shed light on each of the Warrior’s passions/plights: “Warrior of Compassion”, “Warrior of the Homeless” (who offers homes to those in need) & “Wall Street Warrior”, as examples. These paintings also exemplify the idea & notion of the “Super Hero” each honing their special power, powers to make a difference in the world.” —George Littlechild
