We Do Not Work Alone activates Nanaimo Art Gallery’s collection of more than sixty-five ceramic works from B.C. with works by contemporary artists, craftspeople, and other cultural practitioners.
The exhibition also features works by influential 20th century potters Kanjiro Kawai, Shoji Hamada, and Maria and Santana Martinez; films by Marty Gross/ Mingei Film Archive; and new installations by artists Steven Brekelmans, Roy Caussy, Kate Metten and Laura Wee Lay Laq.
Works from the collection will be presented in an interactive library. Visitors can discuss and handle the ceramics with pottery librarians from wide ranging backgrounds and expertise. The exhibition will also be accompanied by a market table where visitors can purchase and bring home wood fired pottery from Nanaimo’s Tozan Society.

Artist Kate Metten's work nods to the folkcraft traditions that were embraced by many of the potters in our collection, while reflecting on the industrial forms and materials that surround us every day.
