When We were Young invite

“Memory defines who we are and shapes the way we act more closely than any other single aspect of our personhood,” says Steven Rose in The Making of Memory. “We know who we are, and who other people are in terms of memory.” Five Medicine Hat artists were invited to respond to the theme “when we were young,” by recollecting their personal memories as inspiration for their work. Safira Lachapelle, Susan Knight, Jessica Plattner, Wendy Struck, and Kat Valenzuela created pieces over the past year: all of the artists were inspired by memories, but from radically different points of view. The result is a diverse collection of pieces that celebrate the joy and innocence of childhood as well as the emotional complexities and simplicities of youth.

Medicine Hat is home to immense talent. The five women who contributed to this exhibition are not just talented artists—they contribute to Medicine Hat’s rich cultural community in a variety of ways. They are volunteer board members, community event organizers, freelance photographers, interior designers, mothers, administrators, and visual art instructors. This exhibition was curated by Xanthe Isbister and developed for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program (TREX). It will tour throughout Alberta from May 2016 to February 2019 in non-traditional exhibition spaces such as public libraries, schools and visitor centres.
