Zane Wilcox’s new work uses the ziggurat as the starting point for formal investigation. Borrowing from the terraced step pyramids of ancient Mesopotamia, the sculptures are made up of stacked cubic forms. Their juxtaposed planes and masses set up repeated rhythmic patterns and create deeply receding interior spaces. Also at play in this work is a certain ambiguity of time and place. The rough materiality of the sculptures speaks of something ancient and weathered, while their geometric shapes, in the end, relate as strongly to the skyscraper as to the temple.

Zane is a Regina-based artist who holds a MFA from the University of Regina and a BMus from the University of British Columbia. His materially rich clay sculptures are inspired by architecture, machinery, ancient stone structures and the prairie landscape—though they make no direct references to them—and have been exhibited across Canada and in the United States and Australia. Zane has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award from the International Sculpture Center, and his work can be found in the collections of the MacKenzie Art Gallery, Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery, Saskatchewan Arts Board and University of Regina. Outside of the studio, Zane has been active in roles such as juror, visiting artist, workshop presenter and teacher.
