We’re fresh off the first annual Canadian Art Hop, a four-day celebration of art across the country. Tours with curators, artist talks and, of course, plenty of art marked the event, which was organized by Art Dealers Association of Canada (ADAC.)
But there are so many excellent exhibitions to see this week, too, in Canada and beyond.
Travelling to Italy this summer? The Venice Biennale is on through November 2024, and veteran art critic Nancy Tousley has chosen some highlights to see if you’re able to attend the world’s largest art fair. (Even if you can’t go to Italy this year, her story is still an excellent, concise look at what’s going on, including details on some of the Canadians who are taking part.)
If you're in Calgary, today’s the last day to catch Audrey Mabee’s Friends and Fantasies I Have Known, at Gibson Fine Art.
And if you’re heading to New York, you still have some time to see recent paintings and drawings by Canadian painter Carol Wainio at Arsenal Contemporary Art New York until May 25.
West Coast photographer and videographer Mark Mushet interviews Canadian photographer Greg Girard about his latest exhibition, Snack Sakura, on view through May 18 at Monte Clark Gallery in Vancouver.
And last but not least, regular contributor Paul Gessell talks with artist Wanda Koop, whose exhibition, WHO OWNS THE MOON, is at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal now through Aug. 4.
And a shout-out to one of our regular contributors, Yani Kong, who received her doctoral degree in Contemporary Art from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia last week! Congratulations, Yani!
And a reminder that if you shop on Amazon, we'd love it if you supported us: We have an association with Amazon that lets you support independent arts journalism in Canada by buying books directly through our site. If you purchase a book by clicking on the Amazon link in a review, Galleries West may receive a small commission.
Do you have art-related plans this summer? Drop me a note with the details. And as always, thanks for reading and for supporting the visual arts scene in Canada.
